You will find yourself skidding round corners and spinning your car around to chase a rival or to maim a group of businessmen standing on the corner. The driving method is quite sensite and takes a while to get used to. These can either give you extra time, damage your vehicle, make you super slippery, or give you weird effects such as large pedestrians, jelly suspension, or an electric gun zapping anything nearby. To add even more fun to the game, there are various bonuses dotted around the city. It was later released as we see it today in all its gory glory. It was initially released with zombies and green blood, rather than normal people, as it was deemed more acceptable. Your aim in the game is to either win the race or smash the other drivers to pieces.īack when it was launched in 1997, the game caused controversy for its gory depiction of killing people and blood splattering. The more imaginative way you kill a pedestrian, the more time you gain – and massacre more than one at once to gain combo bonuses and even more time. Your time limit runs down, and you gain extra time by splattering pedestrians and smashing up the other drivers. While regular racing games of the 90s – such as the Need For Speed, Test Drive, Ridge Racer, and Daytona series – focused on racing others cars around a set track, Carmageddon opened a generation to free racing on an open world, but with an extra twist.Ĭarmageddon is a racing game set in a large open environment filled with pedestrians and power ups, racing four other vehicles around a series of checkpoints. I admit it's not quite up to par with Carmageddon 2's stuff, mainly because I imagine it would be hellish to licence big named bands for the game on the budget they had to work with, but the music fits and isn't offensive. The gory classic controversial splat fest racing game comes to a mobile phone near you.īack in 1997, a game was released by Stainless that would change gaming history forever, a game that would break all the rules set before it and set the media a fenzy. Reincarnation has some pretty cool music. I am a metalhead first and foremost but the tunes in the game are fun and work quite nicely.Ĭarmageddon 2 got me into Maiden, which was great. It's a man's art, for gently caress sake. Yeah it hit him bad in the feels, It's one thing to say "Yeah I wasn't into it", it's another to make threads demanding a patch where you can "Get rid of that dubstep bullshit". That's a real shame to hear about Morgue. Nobby made a good call throwing that spanner in the works, I think. I think what he bought to the game was a modernised since of absurdity and fun musically which is befitting to the game and can be viewed as somewhat mocking those who hate it. On the dubstep stuff, Morgue did cop a lot of poo poo for his contributions (hardly any of it was actually dubstep, mind) and that went a ways to making the poor guy feel pretty poo poo, it wasn't fun to see. But then i got used to it and it opened up the way to awesome stuff like Megadeth and Overkill and whatnot Yeah when i was young and dumb i always thought that Maiden and such sounded cheesy as hell with those high pitched vocals. At the time I first heard it, it didn't make a big impact on me because I was a dumb kid, but at some point in high school I had a realization I needed to listen to more then just music from video games and decided to look into the real music I heard in a video game I didn't particularly care for it myself, but it wasn't really any worse than the electronic stuff in the old games and I just put on Spotify in the background instead of having a meltdown on the forums.ĭid this really happen? I do not like dubstep not one bit but it never bothered me in the game, I don't even remember the music really, I guess I never pay too much attention to other stuff that is not gameplay I think the music sperging has died down quite a bit since one of the patches added the option to replace the contents of the music folder, but some people were really up in arms about the dubstep at first. At one point, someone unironically suggested that Stainless should get the guy from Mindless Self Indulgence to do the soundtrack. Go to the official Carmageddon forums to see a lot of well-informed opinions on game development and equally great suggestions for improving things such as the background music. because Carmageddon introduced it to them when they were impressionable 12 year olds. Do people honestly complain about the dubstep in the game? That's hilarious considering probably the majority of people playing this only like Fear Factory etc.
